Why Youth Matters – The Missing Piece for Peace and Security

Youth-inclusive peace negotiations are key to more sustainable peace. In spite of this fact young people still seldomly sit at the negotiation table and continue to be excluded from decision-making processes concerning peace and security matters. Too often they are merely reduced to stereotypes of victims or preparators of violence. Young peacebuilders’ potential to advocate for peace but also the threats that they face are mostly overlooked. Security policy stakeholders and decisionmakers as well as other actors involved should acknowledge the role that young people can take on when addressing peace and security issues but also understand that strategies for preventing and solving conflicts strongly benefit from youth participation.

The event is initiated and co-hosted by current and former youth delegates partnering with the Kofi Annan Foundation, Search for Common Ground and the United Nations Association of Germany. The event „Why Youth Matters – The Missing Piece for Peace and Security takes place hybrid on Feb 18, 2022, 5.30-7.00 pm.

This side-event is intended as an interactive round-table discussion. After a short introduction of the UN framework and efforts for more youth-inclusive peace processes it will be up to the audience to identify key questions for the discussion. The event will first explore the relationship between national security actors and youth while focusing on their respective understanding of security. The panellists will then talk about the perspective of youth and their potential for security stakeholders. Lastly, we will identify ways of bridging the gap between security stakeholders and youth.

The event aims to inspire further action towards mainstreaming the Youth, Peace and Security Agenda into action – just in time before the UN Secretary General is expected to publish a report on Youth, Peace and Security in 2022.

Offizielles Side-Event zum Thema „Jugend, Frieden & Sicherheit“ auf der Münchner Sicherheitskonferenz 2022.

Inklusivere Friedensverhandlungen führen zu nachhaltigerem Frieden. Doch noch immer sitzen junge Menschen in Entscheidungsprozessen zu Friedens- und Sicherheitsfragen selten mit am Verhandlungstisch. Zu häufig werden sie lediglich als Opfer oder als Täter von Gewalttaten wahrgenommen. Das Potenzial junger Leute, die sich für Frieden einsetzen, aber auch die Bedrohungen, denen sie dadurch ausgesetzt sind, finden kaum Beachtung. Sicherheitspolitische Entscheidungsträgerinnen und -träger sowie andere Akteure sollten die essentielle Rolle junger Menschen für Frieden und Sicherheit stärker anerkennen und verstehen, dass Jugendbeteiligung Strategien zur Prävention und Lösung von Konflikten verbessert.

Aktuelle und ehemalige Jugenddelegierte zur UN-Generalversammlung organisieren deshalb in Partnerschaft mit der DGVN, der Kofi Annan Foundation und Search for Common Ground ein Side-Event auf der Münchner Sicherheitskonferenz 2022. Die Veranstaltung „Why Youth Matters – The Missing Piece for Peace and Security“ findet online am 18. Februar um 17.30 Uhr statt.

Das englischsprachige Event läuft dabei ausdrücklich interaktiv als Gespräch am runden Tisch ab. Nach einer kurzen Einführung zur Arbeit der Vereinten Nationen für mehr Jugendbeteiligung in Friedensprozessen bekommt das Publikum die Gelegenheit, Leitfragen an die Diskussionsteilnehmenden zu bestimmen. Diskutiert werden zum einen die Beziehung zwischen Akteuren für nationale Sicherheit und Jugend und ihr jeweiliges Verständnis von Sicherheit. Zum anderen sprechen die Teilnehmenden auch über die Perspektive junger Menschen und ihr Potenzial für sicherheitspolitische Akteure. Am Ende steht die Frage: Wie kann eine erfolgreiche Partnerschaft zwischen jungen Menschen und sicherheitspolitischen Akteuren gelingen?

Die Veranstaltung soll zu weiteren Maßnahmen anregen, um die Agenda für Jugend, Frieden und Sicherheit in die Praxis umzusetzen – gerade noch rechtzeitig, bevor der UN-Generalsekretär voraussichtlich 2022 einen Bericht über Jugend, Frieden und Sicherheit veröffentlichen wird.
